Fluid Dynamics of the Atmosphere and Ocean: Course Description

Fluid dynamics is an exciting field of scientific study that has a myriad of applications, from meteorology to civil engineering. This OpenCourseWare places emphasis on the essentials of fluid dynamics and apply them to atmospheric and earth sciences. Professor James Hansen will lead students through this course, using lecture notes and homework assignments to outline the course material. In addition, this OpenCourseWare includes the complete readings that will be referenced in the lecture notes. Topics covered in this free course will include kinematics of fluid flow, vortex flows and waves. Students will also be using MATLAB software, a computing program that will be necessary to run some of this OpenCourseWare's files. Students should have a strong prior understanding of algebra and wave kinematics before taking this course.

Lecture notes and homework assignments will be provided for free on the Web. To learn more about this course, visit the fluid dynamics of the atmosphere and ocean course home page.
