European Imperialism in the 19th and 20th Centuries: Course Description

'European Imperialism in the 19th and 20th Centuries' is taught by Professor David Ciarlo and is designed for students with an interest in the political, economic and cultural implications of the European Imperialist movement. The course covers imperialism between 1840 and 1960. Specific topics to be discussed include theories of imperial expansion, scientific racism, the role of social class and gender in various colonies and globalization in the post-colonial world. The course uses examples from literature and film. These examples are applied in three short papers and a final exam. Students must decide upon a conclusion and argue it in their research papers.
