Engineering Risk-Benefit Analysis: Course Description
In 'Engineering Risk-Benefit Analysis' OpenCourseWare, students will learn about the three methodologies of risk assessment in engineering, such as reliability and probability risk assessment, decision analysis and cost-benefit analysis. The free course teaches students how to determine large risks in important engineering projects, significant infrastructures, new product development, infrastructure renewal projects and design and operation processes within environmental impacts. Students will also learn how to handle risks and benefits in critical situations, such as environmental situations, human safety and financial technologies. Students will review probability theory and statistics to sharpen their skills in risk-benefit analysis. Some of the lecture topics include probability distribution, availability, logic and certainty, probabilistic risk assessment, multistage decision model and risk aversion. The on-campus course was taught by MIT Professor George Apostolakis in a lecture session format two times per week followed by an optional tutorial session once a week.
This OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes and assignments. If you are interested in taking this free course, visit the engineering risk management course page.
