Disaster, Vulnerability, and Resilience: Course Description

Natural and technological disasters have become more damaging, difficult to manage and sometimes discriminatory for whom they may effect. The 'Disaster, Vulnerability, and Resilience' OpenCourseWare from MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning analyzes regional settlements, legal land use decisions and technologies that have increased the impact of disasters on these populations. Students will become familiar with the politics and social dynamics that preside over every stage of the disaster management cycle. The course begins with a look at past disasters and focuses on the role that institutions, policies and politics have taken in recovery efforts. Students will also examine organizational and individual behavior in high-stress situations. This graduate-level course is taught by MIT Professors JoAnn Carmin and Jennifer Leaning.
