Developing Musical Structures: Course Description

Listening to a musical composition may seem like a natural, passive activity, but is an extremely complicated task that requires lightning-quick analysis of tones, rhythm and other musical forms. Just as human beings can speak a first language without devoting high-level thought to every word's grammar or syntax, most people have deep musical intuitions - even if they are unaware of them. This free Musical Arts course challenged students to analyze their sub-conscious musical abilities through lectures and interactive assignments on musical structure. Students in the original course composed and edited music for class projects using open-source music composition software developed by course Professor Jeanne Bamberger. While students were asked to write music for class exercises, the course was primarily concerned with analyzing music and unearthing latent musical skills. This lecture format course was intended for undergraduate students in a Musical Arts degree program.

This free course provides assignment outlines, a reading list, an example of student work and links to a free music editing software that comes with selections from the professor's text on musical analysis and composition.
