Concepts of Engineering Practice: Course Description
Most engineering courses often focus solely on the mathematics, engineering principles, theory and application of a particular branch of engineering. This leaves a large portion of real-world engineering untouched. Upon graduation, students may find that their education didn't prepare them for many of the 'unspoken' challenges of engineering, such as giving presentations, working in teams, displaying ethical conduct and, of course, finding a job to name a few. This course aims to fill in those gray areas of engineering by informing students about the role of the modern professional engineer in society and reinforcing this information with actual large-scale engineering project examples. Specific course topics, include liability, negotiation, project management and evaluation, oral and written communication, risk analysis and management, public information management, professional ethics, trends in engineering and job placement skills. The course was a requirement for all engineering students in the Masters in Engineering program. Dr. Eric Adams, using both lectures and seminars, taught the original course.
This OpenCourseWare contains some lecture notes, assignments, a student example work and study material. If you're interested in taking this free course, please visit the professional engineering skills course page.
