A certificate in computer information systems is meant for professionals who want to change careers or upgrade their skills. Students will learn about software engineering, database administration and web application development in this program, which are the three main areas of computer information systems. This program also provides hands-on experience and skills required for the installation industry-standard software.

Courses Taken for a Computer Information Systems Certification

Computer Science Concepts

This course provides a broad overview of computer science concepts and is designed to provide students with an appreciation and understanding of the several sects of computer science. These include hardware, operating systems, networks, algorithmic problem solving, net-centric computing and understanding the object-oriented paradigm.

Programming & Object Structures

Students taking programming and object structures will be introduced to concepts of procedural software engineering methodologies in data definition and measurement. Students will also learn how to use screen editors, reporting programs and other applications, including visual development and object-oriented design programs.

Database Program Development

This course will teach students how to develop programs. This instruction is provided in a database environment using a host language.

Software Engineering

A software engineering class teaches students how to analyze, design, implement and test medium-scale software systems as members of a project team. This course will likely involve several real-life projects covering most phases of the software development life cycle.

Networks & Web Application Development

Topics covered in this computer information systems course include enterprise web application development and security. Students also learn about business-to-business applications and consumer-to-consumer applications.

Applied Software Development

Students taking this course will work with their classmates to form a team which will analyze, design and document realistic complex systems. Students will learn management methods, scheduling, control, presenting and group dynamics.
