Comparative Politics and China: Course Description

This course, offered by the Department of Political Science at MIT in Cambridge, MA, looks at the relationship between China and the field of comparative politics. The course examines China's development and looks at how ideology and organization affected its political structure. Students look at how factionalism, elites and the distribution of power impacted social movements within China by looking at specific examples, such as the Cultural Revolution. The course also examines how politics has influenced economic changes, the formation of markets and financial reform. Students evaluate other issues, such as the rule of law, corruption, industrial policy and corruption. These examples are subjected to a comparative analysis to better understanding how they relate to other political structures. Political science professor Dr. Stephen Van Edward Steinfeld teaches this course. To complete the class, students must have an Internet connection and access to the required readings.
