Classical Rhetoric and Modern Politics: Course Description

This OpenCourseWare from MIT presents students with study material relating to persuasion and effective argument. The course, given originally by Professor Leslie Perelman, offers links to readings that were important in the development of rhetoric, such as Aristotle's Rhetoric and Plato's Giorgias. Study guides that provide reading outlines and questions about the text accompany certain readings. The course also features links to historically notable examples of rhetoric in practice, such as speeches from Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill. The related resources section contains links to sites with definitions of rhetorical terms and an overview of syllogisms (deductive reasoning made up of a major and minor postulate plus a conclusion). These resources can serve as useful study material to students working on a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Rhetoric and Writing.

This course includes readings and links to further resources. To access these materials, visit the political rhetoric course page.
