Broadcasting Producer: Online Degree Programs for Becoming a Broadcasting Producer
Typically, a minimum of a bachelor's degree is needed for a broadcasting producer position; however, many technical jobs require only an associate's degree and may eventually lead to production jobs. Since broadcasting is a field that requires hands-on training and experience, most institutions do not offer online broadcasting programs; the State University of New York at Oswego is the only school currently offering an online broadcasting program.
Broadcasting Degree Program Details
Associate of Applied Science in Broadcasting
An associate's degree program in broadcasting will prepare you for entry-level positions in the broadcasting field and qualify you for entry into a bachelor's degree program in broadcasting. Online broadcasting degree programs may require that students complete lab requirements on campus. Because of the technical nature of many broadcast topics, hands-on experience is sometimes required to provide students with well-rounded educations. Many associate degree programs can be completed in as little as 18 months. Required classes will cover topics like audio and video production, mass communications law and broadcasting production.
Bachelor of Science in Broadcasting
Most jobs in broadcasting production and broadcast journalism are reserved for candidates with bachelor's degrees. Online degree programs may combine broadcasting with other related fields, like mass communications or journalism. The curriculum of a bachelor's degree program in broadcasting covers many of the same basic topics as that of an associate's degree program. However, a 4-year degree program covers some subjects in greater detail and allows students to study other areas of the field not available in the associate's degree curriculum.
Master of Arts in Broadcasting
A master's degree in broadcasting can help give job candidates competitive advantage because fewer professionals hold graduate degrees in the field. Graduate programs in broadcasting also allow candidates to explore various sub-areas of the field. Subjects covered in broadcasting courses at the graduate level include communications theory and media management. Some institutions allow students to choose thesis or non-thesis degree programs.
