Barbers specialize in cutting and styling men's hair; they also might offer services like facial shaving and scalp treatments. Barbers must have state licensure, a process that requires completion of a cosmetology or barbering program. Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Indian River State College and Pensacola Junior College are three schools where one can study to become a barber.

Details of Barber Degree Programs

Certificate or Diploma in Barbering

Some certificate or diploma programs in barbering are specifically designed for aspiring barbers, while others are cosmetology programs with barbering-focused courses included in the curricula. Required classes in a barbering program usually cover topics like safety and sanitation, styling basics and color theory. Students may have to take general education courses in subjects like mathematics, history and English; however, these requirements typically are minimal for those in non-degree programs.

Associate of Applied Science in Barbering

The primary difference between an associate's degree program and a certificate or diploma program in barbering is that the former includes more general education requirements. Most associate's degree programs include a minimum of 60 credit hours, with about a third of those being made up of general education classes. Many associate's degree programs allow students to choose among elective courses, creating a customized educational experience.
