Anthropology of the Middle East: Course Description

This OpenCourseWare from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology examines how the culture, performance and narrative of the Middle East are informed by issues of power and politics. In particular, the course looks at the ways traditional performances are influenced by modernization. The topics covered include folktales, sacred narrative, oral epic performance, Koranic chant performance, cultural production and resistance. MIT Professor Susan Slyomovics teaches this free undergraduate anthropology class. The course includes a documentary by Professor Slyomovics.
