Proseminar in Philosophy I: Course Description

The Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers OpenCourseWare that provides in-depth analysis of most classical philosophers and their theories. The course's first section covers the philosophical aspect of arithmetic, looking at how numbers and mathematical terms can be ascribed to external objects. This examination of arithmetic foundations includes the musings of philosophers, such as Hume. The course also looks into how classical philosophers, such as Socrates denote concepts. Students also explore the foundations of logic in analyzing the relationships between objects, interpretations of common sense and the utility of truthful language. Assignments offer students probing questions to further their understanding of the new concepts. Students completing the course have deepened their understanding of classical philosophy while being able to break down arguments, offering and assessing criticism and providing individual interpretations. Philosophy professor Dr. Agustin Rayo teaches this course. Students must have an Internet connection and access to required readings.

This OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, required readings list, assignments, external links and a complete download of the course material. Those interested in this free course should visit the Proseminar in Philosophy I course page.
