Theory of Knowledge: Course Description

The Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers OpenCourseWare that explores how people comprehend their knowledge, or in other terms what they know. The course focuses on the works of classical philosophers, such as Descartes, amalgamating them with modern philosophers exploring how one can justify knowledge as true. Assignments cover these questions by asking students to analyze presuppositions about their knowledge of themselves, of others and of the world. The course challenges the student's preset views by asking existential questions, probing the utility of syllogisms and considering the foundation of empirical knowledge. By the end of the course, students should be able to correlate philosophers with their theories and extrapolate those theories to answer the course's fundamental questions about the comprehension of knowledge. Philosophy professor Dr. Patrick Hawley teaches this course.

This OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, required readings list, assignments, a midterm exam and a full download of all the course material. Those interested in this free course should visit the Theory of Knowledge course page.
