Science, Politics, and Environmental Policy: Course Description

Study the U.S. environmental policy and discover the ways various political systems utilize science to put such policies into perspective in this free online City Planning seminar taught by Professor Judith Layzer. This course examined the techniques scientists employ to study the environment and the various ways data about the natural world accumulate. Seminar readers can assess the behavior exhibited towards science by supporters and the media. Continue reading and learn how the role of science in legislative and administrative arbitration is analyzed. Students will determine the possible compensations and shortcomings of raising community involvement in science-related endeavors that many believe the U.S. government should support. The online materials also touch briefly on the extent to which science shapes international environmental management. These environmental policy readings are used in an on-campus MIT course called 'Science, Politics, and Environmental Policy.'

This seminar course includes lecture notes consisting of study questions, an extensive reading list and other class documents available for download. If you're interested in viewing these course materials, visit this environmental policy course page.
