Introductory Quantum Mechanics I: Course Description

The Department of Chemistry at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers this introductory course in quantum mechanics. The course covers basic topics, such as Schrödinger's equation, wave properties, uncertainty principles and operator and matrix formalism and notation. The course also incorporates applications of quantum mechanics, such as harmonic oscillators and other applications governed by 1-dimensional and symmetric potentials. Students also consider matrix methodologies and stochastics by studying vector representations and discrete variables. The course also covers quantum properties, such as angular momentum, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and perturbation theory. Chemistry professor Dr. Troy Van Voorhis teaches this course. To complete the class, students must have an Internet connection and access to the required readings.
