Precision Machine Design OpenCourseWare: A Free Graduate Study Course on Precision Engineering by MIT
'Precision Machine Design,' a graduate course with free online material offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), teaches students to develop designs for machined tools and consumer products. Possibilities range from low-cost eyeglasses to transmission mechanisms to catheter robots. The OpenCourseWare materials from MIT cover both the theoretical and real-world facets of designing systems. Information is presented at a level understood by mechanical engineers and students in Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree program or another related graduate-level program.

Precision Machine Design: Course Description
Mechanical engineers create and innovate, but must also be able to understand the economics and the manufacturing steps that turn a concept into a real-world creation. Professors Martin Culpepper and Alex Slocum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology share their knowledge on these areas by offering the graduate-level 'Precision Machine Design' course materials for free online. The course, designed for trained mechanical engineers or graduate students, teaches the methodologies for designing projects and for building those projects. Students learn to model and estimate the accuracy of a design. The original MIT course combined lectures with hands-on design work. Lectures address topics such as constraint design, adjustable constraint and flexible constraint. The 'Precision Machine Design' OpenCourseWare includes the syllabus, notes and numerous 'tools,' such as an error gain spreadsheet, designs of friction drives and bolted rails and analyses of forces and errors related to various types of machine designs. Projects outlined in the materials range from preliminary drafts of designs to plans in the later phases of the development process.
This course includes lecture notes, spreadsheet tools for download and study materials. If you are interested in taking advantage of this free mechanical engineering resource, visit the precision machine design page.
