Topics in Philosophy of Science: Social Science: Course Description
Why study social sciences? Can human behavior be understood and explained? These are just some of the questions raised by the 'Topics in Philosophy of Science: Social Science' course offered by MIT. It was developed by Professor Sally Haslanger to provide students with an overview of the current theories and methods used in the study of the social sciences. Students examine questions regarding the types of approaches that should be taken towards the study of social sciences and how those differ from the study of natural sciences. The extensive list of readings is accompanied by thought-provoking questions dealing with topics ranging from institutions and practices of the social sciences to values and objectivity. Students will also examine case studies related to modern issues in the social sciences. The course is offered by the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy and is a graduate-level course.
