Optical Engineering: Course Description

'Optical Engineering' explores the connections between inverse problems and statistical optics (i.e. Theory of Imaging). Taught by Professor George Barbastathis via lectures, the course's topics include the review of stochastic processes, probability, and Fourier optics, light coherence theory, light statistics, statistical optics applications, theorem of van Cittert-Zernicke, inverse problems basic concepts and examples and inverse problems information-theoretic view. The ultimate aim of the course is to comprehend imaging systems, leading to a deep and fluent understanding of optics itself. This course would benefit students interested in engineering and metrology, bio-imaging and computing and is offered by the departments of mechanic engineering and materials sciences and engineering at MIT.
