Negotiation and Conflict Management: Course Description
Negotiation scenarios are ubiquitous in daily life--deciding what to do for the weekend, dividing up household chores and closing a sales deal are all situations where principles of conflict management can be used to reach effective outcomes. For human resource managers, negotiation skills are vital. This free course introduces approaches to various business negotiation and bargaining styles while giving students conflict management experience through role-playing scenarios in an employment setting. Students will gain negotiation experience related to human resource issues, such as workplace discrimination, personality clashes among workers and workplace mediation. Bargaining techniques and style topics include distributive bargaining, integrative bargaining and negotiating with difficult people. Professor Mary Rowe teaches this lecture course. Students in an MBA in Industrial and Human Resource Management degree program would find this course beneficial.
This free OpenCourseWare provides lecture notes, an extended bibliography of negotiation literature, assignment guidelines, study questions, quizzes and the complete set of negotiation exercise handouts ideal for educators or facilitators.
