Media Industries and Systems: Course Description
Computer and video game design has been one of the most vibrant and explosive sectors of the entertainment industry for the last decade. 'Media Industries and Systems,' is a free course from MIT. It takes a close look at the vibrant sub-field of media studies and the artistic, technical and business skills that are necessary for the creation, promotion, delivery and acquisition of this media form. The course, which is taught by Dr. Christopher Weaver from the MIT Department of Comparative Media Studies, approaches the subject of media studies from a variety of viewpoints. It concentrates on the design process, customers and current trends in the industry. Other topics explored include game design basics, storytelling, team building, the use of outside resources and online gaming. Students will also study the legal complications surrounding the marketing of a game, including intellectual property rights and patent law. Students who complete 'Media Industries and Systems' will develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan, design, create and market video games.
