Materials Processing: Course Description

This course covers the use of Materials Science and Engineering principles to find efficient and financially viable ways to mass produce solid material within given parameters. The parameters are also discussed and may require, for example, that the production process produce material at a certain rate or with a certain structure or shape. Specific course topics include turbulence, casting, cost modeling, Newtonian fluids, sintering, dimensional analysis, radiation, energy conservation, heat flow and vapor phase transport among other topics. The course is designed for Materials Science and Engineering students. A fundamental understanding of Materials Science is encouraged prior to taking this course. The actual undergraduate MIT course is taught by Professors Adam Powell IV and Randolph Kirchain in lecture and recitation-style formats.
