Malariology: Course Description

Malaria has affected people since at least 2700 B.C. Today the disease affects approximately 100 countries, putting 2.4 billion people at risk. In Africa, nearly 25% of child deaths occur as a result of malaria. This free OpenCourseWare offered by Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, covers the main methods used to fight malaria. These include drug treatments, insecticides and vaccines, as well as arguments for and against each. For instance, at the moment, there is no vaccine. Insecticides that kill mosquitoes may inflict collateral damage on surrounding ecosystems. Students learn the rate at which mosquitos reproduce and develop immunities and how these factors challenge physicians who fight this deadly disease. David Sullivan, M.D., Clive Shiff, Ph.D., and Nirbhay Kumar, Ph.D., teach this OpenCourseWare about malariology at Johns Hopkins University.
