Laboratory Phonology: Course Description
Learning to correctly position your lips, tongue and teeth to correctly pronounce sounds in another language is a difficult task. This course, offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in Cambridge, MA, is ideal for helping Linguistics students to master those sounds. Students learn how pitch and tone affect everyday speech and give clues about what's being said or implied. The course also covers how speech perception can affect what someone hears versus what is actually being said, which is demonstrated by completing a final project. Using Mandarin Chinese, students are able to observe differences in pitch and intonation in this course and laboratory taught by MIT Professor Edward Flemming.
Some assignments, course readings and tools are available for free online. A lab with examples of sounds and pronunciation is also available to enhance learning and for further observation. To take this course, visit the Laboratory Phonology course page.
