Introduction to Demographic Methods: Course Description

A history of demographic data dating back to the Middle Ages is available! Making sense of this vast array of data presents a challenge. This OpenCourseWare teaches how data on life, death, marriage, divorce and census information is gathered and analyzed. Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. The course outlines what a census is and its uses. Students learn about the role of probability in conjunction with statistics on death, birth, marriage and divorce rates and their effect on the study of demographics. Students study changes in population over time and the ramifications of these changes. Johns Hopkins University professor, Stan Becker, Ph.D., teaches this lecture-based OpenCourseWare about demographic data, the way it's gathered and its usefulness.
