Using play to teach is not new, but video games introduce a whole new dimension to the idea. Utah State University's bachelor's degree program in education or instructional technology includes this course, now offered as free OpenCourseWare. 'Instructional Games' could be helpful for students in a Master's of Education program as well.

Instructional Games: Course Description

'Instructional Games,' taught by Professor Brett Shelton, considers genre and theory along with the past and the future of teaching through educational video games. The OpenCourseWare version of this course is based on its design in 2005. Students study theories of why and how people connect with and engage in games. Factors that make a game exciting and re-playable determine how much a game is used and how much can be learned from it. By the end of the course, students have done work on a text-based game for Spoon River Anthology and have produced a design brief for their own game idea.

This course includes a reading list, study material and a video game download - Spoon River. If you are interested, please visit the instructional game design course page.
