History of Public Health: Course Description
This 'History of Public Health' is an OpenCourseWare based on several lectures delivered by instructor Graham Mooney, Ph.D., of the Bloomberg School of Public Health. His thematic approach allows students to investigate public health issues and make comparisons across timeframes as well as regions of the world. For example, the lectures on quarantines investigates various definitions of quarantine, its importance to public health and how quarantines were used throughout history to battle the plague in Italy during the 14th through 16th century and China and Australia in the late 19th and early 20th century. It also examines the role of quarantine during the cholera outbreak that occurred in New York in the late 1890's. Other lectures that cover additional topics, including vaccinations, workplace health issues, professionalism in public health and public health issues in the home and school environments. Students who complete this free course will not only understand important events that have occurred in the field of public health, but also how to learn from the past and use the lessons learned by earlier public health professionals to formulate solutions for today's public health challenges.
