Generating Business Value from Information Technology: Course Description

As information technology (IT) becomes more central to their day to day operations, companies can no longer rely entirely on outsourced IT professionals. MIT's 'Generating Business Value from Information Technology' OpenCourseWare, taught by Dr. Peter Weill, shows business students how to make strategic financial and organizational IT decisions. Rather than focus on the technology itself, the course introduces the use of IT to achieve managerial goals. Students can expect to study the role of IT in four real-world business models. The course uses major companies like UPS and 7-Eleven Japan as case studies to demonstrate the balance between online and physical business models. Finally, the course will explore the issue of business value through topics such as IT investments, outsourcing costs and the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO).

A list of suggested readings and sample assignments are offered on the course website, as well as examples of previous student projects. To learn more, visit the information technology in a business environment course page.
