Financial and Managerial Accounting: Course Description

To become successful users of accounting information presented through finance's specific language and techniques, the Sloan School of Management at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers an OpenCourseWare class. The course identifies five challenges to financial and managerial accounting. These include learning what numbers to include in record keeping and accounting and how to compute them. Students learn to use their judgment in what to measure and disclose and how those numbers both influence and are influenced by decisions. The final challenge describes how to garner this information. The course also covers additional topics, such as revenue recognition, cash flow, marketable securities and liabilities. Students learn through a combination of real-world and hypothetical cases. Business professor Dr. George Plesko teaches this course, which requires an Internet connection and access to the required readings.

This OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, required readings list, lecture notes, sample exams and a complete course download. Those interested in this free course should visit the financial and managerial accounting course page.
