Early Stage Capital: Course Description

One of the most difficult stages in developing a business is raising start-up funds. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's 'Early Stage Capital' OpenCourseWare aims to prepare future entrepreneurs and investors to better understand the process of raising and distributing venture capital. Students will explore standard market practices, how to value a business and the challenges presented by changing and competitive business environments. Using specific case studies, students will analyze the basic elements of the investment process and become familiar with common legal and business jargon. Students are encouraged to use the details of a fictitious business, provided through the OpenCourseWare, in order to practice pitching a start-up to a potential investor. This graduate-level course is offered through the Sloan School of Management and is taught by Professor Shari Loessberg.

Lecture notes, suggested readings and details of a final project are offered on the course website. To download the course materials or to learn more, visit the raising start-up capital course page.
