Downtown Management Organizations: Course Description
Professor Lorlene Hoyt teaches 'Downtown Management Organizations', a course in which its on-campus version actually incorporated the involvement of Mayor Ray Nagin and New Orleans. This Urban Studies and Planning program course gives students the chance to assist in the redesign of New Orleans since its ravaging by Hurricane Katrina. There is a suggested group project component in which students assess the restructuring and management of the French Quarter. Various guest lecturers including North Philadelphia Health System Director of Development David Cohen encourage students to think critically about the development of downtown cores in modern urban environments. Topics students hopefully comprehend by course's end include how to ensure the prosperity of a downtown area and what tools prove effective and ineffective and why.
