General Biology: Course Description
The goal of 'General Biology' is to familiarize students with the scientific method and its applications, provide an understanding of the consequences of random genetic variation over time and demonstrate how to distinguish among evolutionary processes. Among the topics covered are the Darwinian theory of evolution, biodiversity, genetic processes and patterns, geological time and fossil records, ecosystems and plant ecology. 'General Biology,' a free undergraduate course, is offered by the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. The recommended textbook for the course is Biology by Neil A. Campbell Jane B. Reece and Lawrence G. Mitchell, 7th or 8th edition. Professors Mary E. Power, Thomas J. Carlson and Brent D. Mishler and academic coordinator Mike Moser, all with the integrative biology department, teach the course.
Course materials include lecture webcasts in both video and audio-only formats, downloadable exercises and notes. If you're interested in taking this course, visit the general biology course page.
