Cattle Management: Course Description

'Cattle Management' is a free course in EdNet Teleconference format from Utah State University (USU). This course explores how severe drought affects cattle ranching, including the health of cows and calves, hay production and feed quality. Students learn how to discover the right balance of vitamins, minerals and protein in the feed at a reasonable cost to produce a healthy herd. The course also explores factors affecting the herd and the feed when severe drought conditions have had an impact on hay production. The course includes two 12-part video lecture series. The first series focuses on 'Managing Beef Cattle under Drought Conditions' and includes research results from USU's Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Services. The second series covers establishing controlled grazing programs, soil conservation, animal considerations in planning grazing programs, forage species and real-life experiences in demonstration grazing programs. The grazing series is presented in cooperation with the University of Missouri's College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. Associate professor Dr. Norris Stenquist, professor emeritus Dr. James A. Bennett and extension economist Dr. Deevon Bailey of the Utah State University extension facilitate the course.

Course materials include video lectures and downloadable supplemental articles and reports. If you're interested in taking this course, visit the cattle management course page.
