American Political Thought: Course Description

As part of the Political Science bachelor degree program at MIT, the original 'American Political Thought' course provides students a survey of politics in America. Professor Sarah Song takes students on a journey through political time as they examine how Americans have thought about domestic politics from the beginning of America. Song begins with how to interpret American thoughts about politics, winds through the Protestant influence, continues with the revolution and the civil war and examines other important events in American history. The course also gives attention to the views of specific political groups like Jeffersonian Republicans and Americans abroad. Reading assignments focus on primary sources from founding fathers, radicals and prominent thinkers.

This OpenCourseWare includes a detailed reading list, lecture notes, study questions and assignments. To learn more about political thought, visit the course page.
