Advanced Geotechnical Engineering: Course Description

Geotechnical Engineering is the engineering discipline literally supporting all major architectural marvels. Without a solid foundation obtained through Geotechnical Engineering principles, skyscrapers would crumble into rubble. Technically speaking, Geotechnical Engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering concerned with the soil and rock that support civil engineering systems. Concepts in geology, mechanics, hydraulics and material science become important as geotechnical engineers examine project requirements, investigate project sites, assess risks and design foundations. Specific course topics include deep and shallow foundations, support systems for excavation, improvement of soil, construction monitoring, controlling groundwater, stability of slopes and site investigation. This course is designed for Geotechnical Engineering students. The actual MIT course is taught by Professor Andrew Whittle in a lecture-style format.
