Advanced Fluid Dynamics of the Environment: Course Description

Fluid dynamics is quite simply the scientific study of fluids (liquids and gases) in motion. As straightforward as this might seem at first glance, consider that to describe fluid movement accurately, you need to know many physical properties of the liquid (temperature, density, velocity, etc.) along with a specific location in time. This course presents students with the theory and mathematical tools and techniques to evaluate complex fluid dynamic problems in water environments. The course is directed towards students of engineering disciplines. Some specific course topics may include transient boundary layers, effects of Earth's rotation on coastal flows, Oseen's cylinder improvement, effects of shear and stratification, buoyancy driven convection in porous media, geophysical fluid dynamics of coastal waters, scaling and approximations and Stoke's flow past a particle. Professor Chiang Mei taught three 1-hour sessions per week in a lecture format. Prerequisites for this course include one advanced-level engineering mathematics course (or equivalent) and an intermediate-level fluid mechanics course.

This OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes, assignments and MATLAB simulations. If you're interested in taking this free course, visit the advanced fluid dynamics course page
